Snow Leopard x Creative Suite 3

The internet has been a buzz with the news of Apple’s latest OS release, Snow Leopard.  I won’t bore you with features, you can check out Apple’s website for all that stuff.

Snow Leopard

Like the sound of a slightly smaller footprint on the hard drive and a bit of performance boost.  But still a bit leery about doing the upgrade.  One of the biggest reasons being Adobe’s stance of “not supporting” CS3 on Snow Leopard.  Choosing to focus on their future product releases instead of compatibility of software that is “2.5 years old.”

What I find a kick in teeth for me is that I actually got CS3 back on March 2008 (around end of the month).  I bought the full version Master Collection suite, which was about $2600!  For me this was a big purchase, because I use these programs more as a hobby.  I don’t really make any kind of money from it; so I absorbed the costs of getting it.

Plus Creative Suite 4 (CS4) was announced on September 23, 2008 as the successor to Adobe Creative Suite 3; and was officially released on October 15, 2008.  So in essence, what Adobe is telling me is because I bought CS3 at the end of its product life cycle, I am pretty much left with two options:  1) Shell out more money for the CS4 upgrade, or 2) Install Snow Leopard on my Mac and whatever problems I encounter are mine alone.  I think that is poor business on Adobe’s end.  And frankly, Apple announced this OS upgrade last year.  Its not like SL was dropped on them out of nowhere.  And from what I gather, they still have quite a large CS3 customer base.

CS3 is really the only thing that is making me hold off on upgrading.  The plan right now is to get me an external hard drive with firewire connectivity and clone my hard drive as it is now before I do anything.  That way, if something does go wrong with the upgrade I can at least return my computer back.  And I would probably go with this method anyway, but considering the amount of money I shelled out for CS3 I expect more from Adobe.  It doesn’t help that I have read mixed reviews regarding the issue.  Some people say it works fine on SL, some people experience all sort of problems.  Which is why I am taking proper precautions before I even load up the installation disk.

Other than that, I hear good things about Snow Leopard.  Certainly looking forward to using it…hopefully soon.

(Other than this compatibility issue, I have no problems with Adobe.  I love my suite and I try to learn more and more about it so I can increase my skills and proficiency with it.  I just think they should have done a better job addressing the Snow Leopard upgrade in regards to CS3)
